Project Staff Member (prae doc): ISM-FLOW: measuring the 3D motion of the Local Interstellar Medium

Project outline:

The ERC Advanced Grant ISM-FLOW will attempt to make the first (3D) space motion map of the Local Interstellar Medium. The project will use a dedicated large observational campaign in the near-infrared at ESO (ESO Public Survey VISIONS), and ESA Gaia data, and will cover topics on the formation of giant molecular clouds, star formation and young stellar populations (1-100 Myr), the role of feedback, and the formation and evolution of spiral arms and large Galactic gas structures, such as the Radcliffe Wave. We are looking for motivated researchers with experience in astrometry, near-infrared imaging, and astrostatistics to join a collaborative team at the University of Vienna.

 

Job Description:               

The position aims to deepen and extend the professional and scientific education targeting a doctoral degree. Tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Independent research and development of an academic profile targeting a doctoral degree. We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within one year.
  • Participation in research, teaching and administration of the research group/department
  • Participation in examination activities
  • Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Publication of refereed academic articles, support in preparation of research proposals and acquisition of third-party funding, participation in the organisation of conferences, workshops and meetings, etc.

 The candidate who is selected for this position joins VISESS as a PhD student member.

 

Profile:

  • Astronomy/Astrophysics: Master’s Degree or equivalent
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Good programming skills and ability to work with large data sets

Expected starting date: at the earliest possible date

 

Duration of employment: 4 years
(The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months)

 

Extent of employment: 30 hours/week
