University Assistant (predoc): Landslide dynamics – from local monitoring to spatial analysis

Project outline:

Landslide dynamics need to be better understood. Of particular interest is, how locally gained landslide information can be used within spatial assessments. Therefore, landslide need to be investigated in the field as well as by geospatial means. This includes the spatio-temporal analysis of factors, which prepare, trigger and control the landslide dynamics. Furthermore, the potential effects and consequences of these processes are of highest interest. Study regions might include Lower Austria, the whole territory of Austria, New Zealand, or any other region.

 

Job Description:               

The position aims to deepen and extend the professional and scientific education targeting a doctoral degree. Tasks and responsibilities include:

●        Independent research and development of an academic profile targeting a doctoral degree. We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12 months.
●        Participation in research, teaching and administration of the research group/department
●        Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
●        Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
●        Supervision of students
●        Support in preparation of research proposals and acquisition of third-party funding
●        Participation in the organisation of project-related conferences, workshops and meetings, etc.
●        Involvement in international co-operations
●        Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
●        Integration into the research group and participation in administrative duties

 

The candidate who is selected for this position joins VISESS as a PhD student member.


Profile:

●        Earth Sciences / Geography / Environmental Sciences / Geoinformatics: Master Degree or equivalent
●        Excellent command of written and spoken English
●        Interest in Process Geomorphology, in field work and landslide analysis including geospatial landslide modeling
●        Field experience
●        Greatest interest in spatial GIS-based landslide modelling and scenario building
●        Profound IT-knowledge (incl. MS Office or equivalent software; ArcGIS and/or equivalent open source programs for Desktop and Server; experience with slope stability programs is desirable)
●        Interest in project management
●        Excellent pedagogic suitability for teaching skills
●        Knowledge in e-learning is beneficial
●        Ability to work in teams

 

Expected starting date: Ideally 13.06.2022

 

Duration of employment: 4 years. The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.
