Below you can find an overview of various funding opportunities provided by the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS), the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy (FGGA), the University of Vienna (UniVie), as well as external funding opportunities.

External fellowships and grants for PhD students
- DOC Fellowship Programme (Austrian Academy of Sciences) – fellowships of up to 36 months
- DOC-Team Fellowship Programme (Austrian Academy of Sciences) – fellowships of up to 36 months
- L´OREAL Fellowships (L´Oreal Austria) – fellowships of 6-12 months for female scientists in medicine, natural and life sciences or mathematics
- Dimitrov Fellowships (ÖAW) – fellowships of 3-6 months for thesis completion in the fields of mathematics, natural and technical sciences
- Mannagetta Fellowships (ÖAW) – fellowships of 8-12 months for thesis competion in the fields of humanities, cultural studies and social sciences

- ÖH (Austrian National Union of Students) provides a collection of federal grants, state grants and social support programmes
External grants for supervisors
- doc.funds (FWF) – funding for 5-10 doctoral candidates
Mobility – short-term
- Mobility & Care Fund (Human Resources and Gender Equality, UniVie) – funds to cover additional childcare costs during mobility for female staff members
- International Office Shortterm Grants Abroad (KWA, International Office, UniVie) – travel funds for one research stay abroad of at least 2 weeks up to 3 months during the time of your PhD studies
- International Communication (ÖFG) – supplementary support programme for early stage researchers for travels abroad and inviting scientists to Austria
- Mobility Fellowships – Jerusalem, Kyoto, Beijing, Shanghai (UniVie) – research stays of at least 3 weeks and a maximum length of stay of 8 weeks to Strategic Partner Universities of the University of Vienna
- Förderungsstipendium (UniVie) – support in the event of an above-average financial burden, e.g. for travel costs for research activities outside Vienna
- Erasmus+ Short-Term PhD-Mobility (EU) - funding for self-organised 5-14-day stays abroad for regular PhD students of the University of Vienna who do not hold a paid position at UniVi
- Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Researchers – funding for stays of 2 days up to 2 weeks abroad for UniVie academic staff members to acquire knowledge and/or learn new techniques in another European country for employees of the academic university staff (except lecturers)
- GO.INVESTIGATO (ÖAW) - grants for 1-9 month stays outside Austria (library, archive and field research) which are necessary for preparing scientific papers or publications or for drafting external funding applications
Mobility – long-term
- Marietta Blau-Grant (OEAD) – six- to twelve-month study periods abroad for PhD students of Austrian universities
- Erasmus+ International Mobility (EU) – study visits < 4 months at selected partner universities outside Europe
- Erasmus+ Traineeships (EU) – self-organised traineeships of max. 12 months relevant to study programmes in another European country
- CEEPUS (OEAD) - multilateral exchange programme with Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe
- Marshall Plan Scholarships Program (Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation)
- Circle U (Circle U. European University Alliance)
- GO.INVESTIGATO (ÖAW) - grants for 1-9 month stays outside Austria (library, archive and field research) which are necessary for preparing scientific papers or publications or for drafting external funding applications

Research awards and prices
- BMBWF Award of Excellence (BMBWF) – for best graduates of a doctoral programme, Austrian or EWR citizenship or equated third-country nationals and stateless persons pursuant to § 4 StudFG, nominations via subunit or VISESS
- Stefan M. Gregerly Award (ÖAW) - for outstanding doctoral theses on research questions in the areas of environment, nature and wildlife conservation, preferably with reference to Austria.
- Leistungsstipendium nach dem StudFG (UniVie) - for outstanding academic achievements, Austrian citizens or equivalent foreigners and stateless persons (§ 3 Bas 1 iVm § 4 StudFG)
- Theodor Körner Award (Theodor Körner Fonds) – for ongoing dissertation projects
- Bank Austria Research Award (Bank Austria Foundation for Science and Research) – for particularly interesting and promising research projects, offered in yearly rotation to different Doctoral Schools
